The world’s a stage with launch of Perse Academy of Performing Arts

Children can take centre stage at The Perse Academy of Performing Arts (PAPA), an inspiring new weekend programme launching in January 2026.
Building on The Perse’s tradition of excellence and creativity in the performing arts, PAPA will offer classes in acting, dance, singing and musical theatre, initially to all youngsters aged 4 to 11 (Reception to Year 6), before opening to 11-18 year olds from April 2026.
Bookings can be made via a dedicated new website for the programme https://papa.perse.co.uk.
PAPA will give young people the opportunity to explore their talents, build confidence and perform on stage. Perse Director of Theatre David Barrett (pictured), whose rich professional experience includes international and UK touring credits, will lead PAPA as Creative Director.
David trained at Mountview Theatre School and has worked extensively as a performer, director, choreographer and casting professional. His background in professional theatre and arts education gives him a unique perspective on nurturing young talent.
He said: “Our aim is that every young person who joins PAPA feels at home and supported to grow and develop week by week.
“With the Peter Hall Performing Arts Centre and superb rehearsal spaces across the Perse site, we offer professional experiences from day one in a culture that prizes curiosity and excellence.”
With a choice of disciplines and opportunities to showcase work in live performances, PAPA offers an exciting and high-quality weekend option for families in Cambridge and beyond.
PAPA will run on Saturdays during term time at The Perse Upper School from January 2026. Registration for courses will open soon.
In the meantime, we are recruiting for talented and enthusiastic tutors to help PAPA performers shine in the spotlight. For more details and to apply, please visit our Work with Us page.
