Sport
MORE THAN A LEVELS
Sport
A sport-for-all ethos, with 150+ teams and expert coaching encouraging every pupil to participate, compete and enjoy being active. Our elite sportsmen and women enjoy national and international success.
Games
All students in the Sixth Form have five hours of timetabled games lessons over the two-week timetable.
Our core sports are cricket, hockey, netball (girls), rugby (boys), football and tennis, but there are plenty of options available including badminton, basketball, climbing, dance, fitness, rounders, rowing, shooting, swimming, touch rugby and yoga, all designed to give students the opportunity to try something new.
Students can also select sport coaching options during their timetabled enrichment lessons.

Extra-Curricular Sport
We want each student to find a sport they enjoy enough to pursue after leaving school. We strive for excellence both in performance and attitude, and cater for everyone – regardless of ability – by providing a very high standard of coaching, facilities and opportunities to train and compete.
We field around 160 teams across the Upper and Sixth Form each year and play on average 450 matches per term across all sports.
The cricket programme’s main focus is on all individuals developing and practising their key skills, in addition to structured and focused nets sessions.
During the winter, pre-season training takes place indoors, using our six-lane indoor nets, as well as in internal indoor cricket league for Sixth Form players.
We field two boys’ cricket teams and one girls’ cricket team in the Sixth Form. The boys’ and girls’ 1st XIs represent the school in county and national competitions and play in an annual cricket festival.
The hockey programme aims to provide an environment in which every student has a rewarding experience. The high quality of our coaching and excellent facilities enables players to fulfil their potential.
We teach the 11-a-side version of the game, with a focus on tactical awareness and developing successful team play. The importance of combining athletic development and skill advancement is paramount and players look forward to representing the school teams in their weekly fixtures.
We have multiple boys’ and girls’ teams in the Sixth Form and during the Michaelmas term, boys and girls also play indoor hockey.
We enter the national schools competition and the national indoor schools championships at U18 level, and have a proud tradition of success at county, regional and national levels.
We also aim to provide a range of touring experiences for boys and girls.
Although we strive for excellence both in performance and attitude, we cater for all students to ensure they enjoy playing netball.
The emphasis is on the acquisition of tactical knowledge and players are encouraged to become more independent in their decision-making on court.
We field multiple teams in the Sixth Form and enter the national schools championships each year.
Our 1st and 2nd VII teams also enjoy a domestic pre-season tour.
Our rugby structure allows players access to high quality coaching and develop their skills.
We encourage boys to play an expansive and enjoyable brand of rugby and we develop this through a games-based approach in training sessions, while focusing on developing specific skill sets for the more able and dedicated players.
We field multiple teams and give players the chance to take part in a European pre-season tour every two years.
Students in Sixth Form have the opportunity to partake in football as a games option. This is complemented by a range of local fixtures for 1st and 2nd XI teams, as well as entry into the Independent Schools FA and English Schools FA cup competitions.
Swimming is offered as a games option in the Sixth Form.
The school offers two swimming club sessions each week, one before school and one after school. Both sessions are open to all year groups.
Additionally, the school participates in the ESSA Relays and the John Nalson Cup, with plans to expand the fixture program in the future.
Swimming sessions take place on-site in the swimming pool which is part of the Perse Sports Centre. Find out more here.
Our tennis programme is largely based around coaching doubles match play. Students playing tennis are organised into groups – the team squad, the development squad and the beginners.
We enter teams in the schools championships for both the Aberdare and Glanville Cups.
Badminton – Our weekly lunchtime club is open to all and we have two teams competing in the Cambridge University League.
Basketball – Weekly sessions run at lunchtimes with after-school training sessions taking place for teams, who play in the Cambridge Basketball League, as well as taking part in the Culford Slam and other invitational tournaments..
Cross Country – We have teams competing regularly in local and national competitions. Meanwhile, our after-school Perse Runners group provides an informal opportunity to all ages to enjoy a short group run in the local area. We also offer an inclusive Couch to 5km programme for those wishing to take up running.
Fitness – We have a strength and conditioning coach who runs lunchtime and after-school clubs for students who wish to follow a fitness programme.
Golf – We have a senior squad, which plays in national team competitions over the year.
Orienteering – We enter teams into the national school championships every year.
Rowing – Students benefit from a blended games programme that includes both land‑based ergometer sessions and on‑the‑river training. Pupils who train regularly outside of school are further supported through bespoke Strength & Conditioning provision.
Shooting – Lunchtime and after-school sessions with a professional coach are open to all in our dedicated range, with the opportunity to take part in national competitions. Over the years we have had multiple successes as a school with pupils representing England.
Swimming – After-school sessions will take place twice a week, with the opportunity to take part in local and national competitions.
Table tennis – After-school sessions take place once a week, while we also have four outdoor tables available for use at any time.
