PELICAN SCHOOL

Learning Support & SEN

Every child develops differently, and our teachers take time to understand each child’s individual strengths, needs and ways of learning. Regular observation and assessment help us monitor children’s progress and identify at an early stage where some additional support may be helpful.

If a possible learning need is identified, we talk with parents and agree an appropriate period of support and monitoring. The Head of Learning Support for the Pelican and Prep may undertake an internal assessment, depending on the child’s age, and advise teachers on strategies or adjustments to support the child within the classroom.  Where appropriate, we may recommend seeking further advice from an educational psychologist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist or another external professional.

Information from assessments can be used to create an individual pupil profile, ensuring that relevant staff understand the child’s needs and the approaches that will help them participate confidently and make progress.

Any specialist learning-support sessions at the Pelican normally take place within the school day. We work closely with parents throughout, reviewing support as children grow and their needs develop.
