Psychology

Psychology at The Perse Sixth Form explores one of the most fascinating questions of all: why do people think, feel and behave the way they do? Combining scientific research with the study of human behaviour, A level Psychology examines topics ranging from memory and attachment to mental health, decision-making and social influence. Students develop an evidence-based understanding of the human mind while learning to evaluate competing theories and analyse real psychological research.

Thinking scientifically about human behaviour

Psychology is a research-based discipline that develops both scientific and analytical thinking. Students learn how to interpret and evaluate psychological studies, analyse data and identify patterns in research findings. Alongside exploring the major theories of psychology, they develop the ability to explain complex ideas clearly, construct evidence-based arguments and evaluate different perspectives.

The course also strengthens students’ confidence in working with quantitative data, enabling them to interpret graphs, statistical information and research findings, which are valuable skills that are increasingly sought after across many professions.

Learning beyond the classroom

Students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of Psychology through a wide range of enrichment opportunities. The Perse Psychology Society (PsychSoc) regularly welcomes visiting speakers, including university academics and practising psychologists working across different specialist fields. Students also have opportunities to present their own research and interests, developing confidence in communicating complex ideas to others.

Those wishing to explore the subject further are encouraged to enter national Psychology Olympiads and essay competitions, while the department’s well-stocked classroom library and enthusiastic programme of reading recommendations support wider independent study and excellent preparation for university.

University preparation and future pathways

Psychology develops highly transferable skills in critical thinking, scientific analysis, research, data interpretation and communication. Students learn to evaluate evidence, present balanced arguments and explain complex ideas with clarity, skills that are valued across both science and humanities disciplines.

The subject provides excellent preparation for university courses including Psychology, Neuroscience, Psychology and Philosophy, Psychology and Linguistics, Forensic Psychology, Medicine, Law, Biology, Anthropology, Business, Economics and many other disciplines. It also supports careers in healthcare, clinical psychology, education, business, marketing, human resources, research, the public sector and many other professions where understanding people and analysing evidence are essential.

Recent highlights

Students regularly achieve success in national competitions, including runner-up and Bronze Award performances in the Psychology Olympiad. Perse students have also been shortlisted for the prestigious John Locke Essay Competition, reflecting the department’s emphasis on independent thinking, academic curiosity and excellence in written argument.
