Politics

Politics at The Perse Sixth Form explores the ideas, institutions and debates that shape modern societies. Through the study of UK politics, US politics and political ideologies, students learn to analyse political systems, evaluate competing viewpoints and develop informed perspectives on contemporary issues. The course is ideal for students who enjoy debate, current affairs and critical thinking.

Understanding politics in a changing world

Politics is a dynamic and discussion-based subject that encourages students to engage critically with the political events shaping both the UK and the wider world. Lessons combine academic theory with contemporary examples, helping students develop an understanding of how political systems operate in practice.

Throughout the course, students strengthen their analytical, evaluative and communication skills while learning to construct persuasive arguments supported by evidence.

From political ideas to global comparisons

In the Lower Sixth, students focus on UK politics, UK government and political ideologies, including liberalism, conservatism, socialism and nationalism. They explore major constitutional issues, the role of political institutions, democratic participation and the relationship between citizens and government.

In the Upper Sixth, the focus shifts to US politics and comparative politics. Students examine the operation of the American political system, the presidency, Congress, the Supreme Court, political parties, democracy and the influence of interest groups, while comparing political systems and evaluating different approaches to governance.

Learning beyond the specification

Politics students have opportunities to attend conferences, enter essay competitions and engage with current political debates beyond the classroom. The department encourages extensive wider reading and regularly runs mock elections, giving students practical experience of campaigning, public speaking and political debate.

Students are also encouraged to participate in competitions including the RA Butler Politics Prize, providing opportunities to extend their academic interests and develop independent thinking.

University preparation and future pathways

Politics develops critical analysis, research, communication, debate and evaluative thinking. The subject provides excellent preparation for university courses in Politics, International Relations, History, Law, PPE and related social sciences.

The skills developed through Politics are highly valued in careers including government, law, journalism, public policy, international affairs, business and the wider public sector.
