German
Why study German at The Perse?
German offers pupils the opportunity to learn one of Europe’s most influential languages while gaining insight into a country renowned for its innovation, engineering, science and cultural heritage. As Germany remains one of the UK’s most important trading partners, German provides a valuable foundation for a wide range of future careers while developing confident communication and analytical thinking.
Learning through culture
We believe language is best understood through the people who speak it. Pupils explore German history, traditions, literature and film alongside developing their linguistic skills, helping them appreciate the richness and diversity of German-speaking cultures. From an early stage, they discover that German pronunciation is logical and accessible, allowing pupils to build confidence quickly and enjoy using the language.
Beyond the classroom
Learning continues through a range of creative cultural activities, including our annual Zinngießen celebration of the German New Year tradition, German Unity Day treasure trails, gingerbread house making and opportunities to explore German cinema. Pupils also visit the Goethe-Institut, attend university events and enjoy overseas visits, with recent trips including Vienna and future visits to Germany being developed.
Recent highlights
Perse pupils have been highly commended in the prestigious Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators and regularly contribute to Kaleidoscope, the school’s modern languages magazine. Through competitions, performances and cultural events, pupils gain both linguistic confidence and a lasting appreciation of the German-speaking world.
