German

German at The Perse Sixth Form develops confidence in students to communicate fluently while exploring the history, culture and society of the German-speaking world. Through literature, film, politics and contemporary issues, they gain a deeper understanding of one of Europe’s most influential cultures while developing the analytical, research and communication skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.

Personalised learning and cultural understanding

Small class sizes allow for highly individualised support, with every student benefiting from weekly one-to-one conversation sessions with a specialist German language assistant. These personalised sessions build fluency, confidence and spontaneity in spoken German, complementing classroom learning and preparing students for both examinations and real-world communication.

Alongside language acquisition, students explore modern German history, with particular emphasis on the period since the fall of the Berlin Wall, while developing an understanding of the cultural, political and social issues that continue to shape the German-speaking world today.

Learning beyond the specification

Students are encouraged to pursue independent research throughout the course, investigating aspects of German-speaking culture that particularly interest them and developing the independent study skills expected at university.

Beyond German lessons, students can enter national essay and translation competitions, participate in events organised by the Goethe-Institut in London, and take part in activities celebrating German language and culture within the School, including the annual Day of German Unity treasure trail and performances in the Modern Foreign Languages drama production.

Learning through culture

A highlight of the German course is the biennial cultural visit to Vienna, shared with students of Art and Music. Closely linked to the A level curriculum, the trip explores the city’s rich artistic and cultural heritage through visits to galleries showcasing Gustav Klimt, Expressionism, New Objectivity and the Vienna Secession, alongside opportunities to experience both classical and contemporary music performances. The visit brings the study of German language, art, architecture and history vividly to life.

University preparation and future pathways

German develops highly transferable skills in communication, analysis, problem-solving, evaluation and independent research. Students also strengthen their ability to recognise patterns, construct logical arguments and negotiate different perspectives – skills that are valued across a wide range of university courses and professions.

German provides excellent preparation for degrees in Modern Languages, History, Politics, International Relations, Law, Business and many other disciplines. Perse students have gone on to study German at university and pursue careers in German-speaking countries, while the language continues to provide opportunities across international business, diplomacy, engineering, education, journalism and global organisations.
