Why study English at The Perse?
English at The Perse develops confident readers, thoughtful writers and articulate communicators through the study of outstanding literature, language and creative writing. Pupils explore a rich range of texts while developing the analytical, imaginative and critical thinking skills that underpin success across the curriculum. Through reading, writing and discussion, they learn how language shapes ideas, influences society and helps us understand ourselves and the world around us.
Finding your voice
English encourages pupils to think independently, debate thoughtfully and communicate with precision, imagination and confidence. We believe the subject is about far more than examination success. Lessons challenge pupils to question, interpret and evaluate different perspectives while developing original ideas of their own. Literary study is enriched by creative writing opportunities that help pupils develop confident, distinctive voices and a lifelong appreciation of reading, writing and critical thinking.
Beyond the classroom
English extends beyond the classroom through a wide range of literary and creative opportunities. Pupils contribute to the school’s award-winning Synthetic Violet literary magazine, enter national creative writing and poetry competitions, and compete in debating and public speaking events. Many also develop original scripts through the National Theatre’s New Views programme. Theatre visits, literary festivals, author talks and writing workshops bring texts to life, broadening literary understanding and inspiring creative thinking.
