Economics
Economics at The Perse Sixth Form encourages students to question assumptions, debate ideas and develop a deep understanding of the forces that shape our world. Through the study of markets, government policy, global trade, inequality and economic decision-making, students learn to analyse complex issues from multiple perspectives while developing the confidence to construct and defend well-reasoned arguments.
Learning through discussion and debate
Discussion and debate are at the heart of A level Economics at The Perse. Lessons challenge students to think critically about contemporary economic issues, evaluate different viewpoints and justify their conclusions using evidence. This emphasis on analytical thinking, argument and communication provides excellent preparation for university interviews, essay writing and the independent study expected in higher education.
Learning beyond the classroom
Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in a vibrant programme of enrichment that extends well beyond the A level specification. Leadership opportunities are available through the Middle School Economics Society, Middle School Investment Club and the Sixth Form Shackle Economics Society, where students organise events, lead discussions and present talks to their peers.
Students can also contribute articles, book reviews and opinion pieces to the department’s termly magazine, Economic Persepectives, taking on editorial roles while developing the writing and analytical skills valued by leading universities. Those with an interest in financial markets can join the Perse Investment Club, managing a virtual investment fund and developing practical investment strategies.
The Economics department also supports participation in prestigious competitions including the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition and the Great British Economics Olympiad, providing opportunities to compete alongside some of the world’s most talented young economists.
University preparation and future pathways
Economics develops highly transferable skills in analytical thinking, problem-solving, data interpretation, evaluation and critical reasoning, alongside strong numerical and essay-writing abilities. These skills provide excellent preparation for university courses in Economics, Finance, Business, Politics and the wider social sciences, as well as competitive applications to many other disciplines.
Economics students progress to careers in banking, finance, consultancy, government, public policy, law, management, entrepreneurship, international development and a wide range of analytical and leadership roles across the public and private sectors.
Recent highlights
Perse economists have enjoyed exceptional success in national and international competitions. A team reached the global final of the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition, finishing among the top 10 teams in the world from more than 6,500 entries and travelling to Philadelphia to present their investment strategy.
Students also regularly reach the national finals of the Economics Olympiad, with one Perse student representing the United Kingdom at the International Economics Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2025. In addition, Perse students consistently achieve top places in national and international economics essay competitions, reflecting the department’s strong culture of independent thought, debate and academic ambition.
