Design & Technology

Why study Design and Technology at The Perse?

Design and Technology combines creativity, engineering and practical problem-solving to turn ideas into reality. Pupils learn how thoughtful design can improve people’s lives while developing the imagination, resilience and technical understanding needed to create innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

Designing for the future

From the earliest stages, Design and Technology pupils are encouraged to think like designers: identifying problems, generating ideas, testing prototypes and refining their work through experimentation. They develop practical skills alongside creativity, collaboration and critical thinking, gaining experience that reflects the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of engineering, product design and manufacturing.

Beyond the classroom

Learning continues through Engineering Club, Design and Technology Club, Stitch-It Club and Warhammer Club, where pupils develop their own projects and collaborate on initiatives such as the Greenpower electric car challenge. Visits to the V&A Museum, the Design Museum and international trips provide further inspiration while exposing pupils to outstanding examples of innovation and design thinking.

Recent highlights

The department recently won the Innovation Prize at the Rotary Technology Tournament, recognising pupils’ creativity, technical ability and problem-solving skills. Design and Technology continues to prepare pupils for careers in engineering, architecture, product design, manufacturing and emerging technologies.
