Computer Science

Why study Computer Science at The Perse?

Computer Science is one of the most influential subjects in the modern world. Advances in artificial intelligence, software development and digital technology are transforming almost every industry, and understanding how these systems work has never been more important. At The Perse, pupils develop computational thinking, programming skills and an understanding of the technologies that shape modern life.

A few lines of code can reach millions of people. Whether creating apps, building software or exploring emerging technologies, pupils learn how Computer Science enables individuals to solve problems, create new possibilities and have a real-world impact.

Learning through problem-solving

Computer Science combines logical thinking, creativity and technical skill. Pupils learn how to design algorithms, write efficient programs and develop computer-based solutions to complex problems. Alongside practical programming, they explore topics such as data representation, computer systems, networks and the ethical implications of technology.

The subject helps pupils develop analytical thinking, resilience and problem-solving skills that are valuable across a wide range of future careers. As computing increasingly underpins every sector, from medicine and engineering to finance and science, Computer Science provides an excellent foundation for the future.

Beyond the classroom

Pupils are encouraged to explore Computer Science beyond lessons through a wide range of clubs, societies and national competitions. Opportunities include the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, British Informatics Olympiad, CyberFirst Girls Competition, Perse Coding Team Challenge, Robotics Challenge, Programming Society, AI Club, Girls’ Coding Club and Retro Gaming Club.

These activities allow pupils to collaborate with like-minded peers, develop new technical skills and engage with Computer Science beyond the GCSE specification.

Recent highlights

Computer Science is currently the most popular GCSE option subject at The Perse and pupils consistently achieve outstanding GCSE results. The department’s strong culture of problem-solving, innovation and technical excellence continues to attract pupils who are interested in programming, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and the technologies shaping the future.
