Chemistry

Why study Chemistry at The Perse?

Chemistry helps us understand the invisible world that shapes everything around us. From the behaviour of tiny particles to the reactions that power modern medicine, industry and technology, pupils discover how chemistry explains everyday life while developing the curiosity and analytical thinking needed to solve real-world problems.

Learning through discovery

Practical work lies at the heart of Chemistry at The Perse. Pupils learn by asking questions, designing investigations and analysing evidence, developing the confidence to think scientifically rather than simply memorising facts. Our Chemistry lessons encourage careful observation, logical reasoning and problem-solving, helping pupils understand not only how chemical processes work but why they matter. As they progress, they develop the practical and intellectual skills needed for further study in chemistry and the wider sciences.

Beyond the classroom

Pupils are encouraged to extend their learning through the Norrish Society, where they explore chemistry beyond the curriculum. Many take part in prestigious national competitions, including the RSC UK Chemistry Olympiad, Cambridge Chemistry Challenge (C3L6), Chemistry Race, Schools’ Analyst Competition, UK Chemistry Tournament, Junior Chemistry Challenge and local Top of the Bench competitions, developing both scientific knowledge and competitive problem-solving skills.

Recent highlights

Perse chemists continue to achieve exceptional success nationally. Three pupils recently placed in the top 0.41% nationally in the C3L6 Challenge, receiving Roentgenium Awards and invitations to a national summer school. Pupils also secured 15 Gold awards in the Chemistry Olympiad, with one student getting silver at the International Chemistry Olympiad.
