Biology
Why study Biology at The Perse?
Biology is the study of life in all its forms, from microscopic cells to complex ecosystems. Through Biology, pupils develop an understanding of the living world and the processes that sustain it, exploring topics such as genetics, health, evolution and biodiversity while building the scientific knowledge and curiosity needed to understand contemporary global challenges.
Learning through practical science
Practical investigation lies at the heart of Biology at The Perse. Pupils regularly develop their scientific skills through hands-on experiments and observations, learning to ask questions, design investigations and evaluate evidence. From microscope work and DNA extraction to dissections and ecological studies, practical activities help bring biological concepts to life while developing confidence in scientific enquiry.
Building biological understanding
In Years 7 and 8, pupils explore a wide range of biological topics, including cells, microscopy, microbiology, plant biology, invertebrates and vertebrates. Alongside this, they develop their understanding of experimental design and scientific investigation.
The GCSE course begins in Year 9 with the study of key biological concepts, cell biology and ecosystems. In Year 10, pupils investigate health and disease, medicine development, plant structures and animal co-ordination and homeostasis. Year 11 focuses on genetics, natural selection, genetic modification and the transport and exchange systems that support life. Throughout the course, pupils develop a strong understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical scientific methods.
Biology in action
Biology provides pupils with opportunities to investigate the living world first-hand through practical work and experimentation. Whether extracting DNA, studying organisms under the microscope or exploring the processes that drive evolution and adaptation, students gain an appreciation of how biological research continues to shape medicine, conservation and our understanding of life itself.
