Biology
Biology at The Perse Sixth Form combines rigorous academic study with extensive practical investigation, enabling students to develop a deep understanding of living systems while gaining the scientific skills needed for university and beyond. From genetics and evolution to ecosystems and human physiology, students explore the processes that underpin life while learning how biological research shapes our understanding of the natural world.
Practical science at the heart of learning
Students learn Biology through experimentation, observation and scientific enquiry. Practical skills are developed throughout the course as students investigate biological questions, analyse data and evaluate evidence. The department places particular emphasis on developing confidence in laboratory techniques and preparing students for the practical demands of university-level science.
By the end of the course, students are capable of using a wide range of biological equipment and techniques, from microscopy and histological examination to serial dilutions and biological dissections.
Developing biological understanding
The course is intellectually demanding and requires students to apply biological knowledge to unfamiliar situations.
In the Lower Sixth, students study practical skills, foundations in biology, exchange and transport systems, and biodiversity, evolution and disease.
In the Upper Sixth, students build on these foundations through the study of communication, homeostasis and energy, alongside genetics, evolution and ecosystems. Throughout the course, practical investigations are integrated with theoretical learning to develop a secure and sophisticated understanding of biological science.
Learning beyond the specification
Students are encouraged to explore Biology beyond the classroom through competitions, research opportunities and enrichment activities. Perse biologists regularly participate in the British Biology Olympiad and British Neuroscience Olympiad, achieving significant success at national level.
The department also supports students undertaking programmes such as the Nuffield Research Placement and Gold CREST Award. The Biology Society provides opportunities for practical exploration beyond the A level curriculum, including dissections and specialist laboratory activities that help prepare students for university study.
University preparation and future pathways
Biology develops analytical thinking, practical laboratory skills, data handling and scientific reasoning. It provides excellent preparation for university courses including Biology, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.
Students benefit from specialist support for competitive university applications, including preparation for admissions assessments such as the UCAT and ESAT, alongside individual guidance on personal statements and applications.
Assessment details
Three written examinations at the end of the Upper Sixth, alongside an internally assessed Practical Endorsement.
The examining board is OCR.
