PES Ascent Group pupils head to Norfolk for Easter Camp
More than 150 pupils, staff, and volunteers travelled to Norfolk at the start of the Easter holidays for the Granta Troop’s annual PES Ascent Group Easter Camp.
Year 8 pupils were guided throughout by experienced Year 10 “Bears”, with patrol groups taking on real responsibility from the outset, building patrol sites and preparing meals for guests from across the camp. The structure gave younger pupils a clear sense of ownership, while older students developed their mentorship and leadership skills in a practical setting.

Activities across the camp were varied and challenging. Pupils tackled high ropes and a zip line, took part in archery sessions, and learned to light and cook over open fires. Patrols also planned, shopped for, and cooked a full three-course meal, crafted patrol flags, and tried their hand at grass sledding.
The camp continues to offer a distinctive opportunity for pupils to collaborate with peers, staff, and volunteers across a range of situations, building independence, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging within their section.
Perse Outdoor Education instructor Maya Hide praised our Year 10 student leaders for how they rose to the occasion.
“They impressed staff and volunteers alike, especially when the weather refused to cooperate. Our Year 10 leaders made sure their Year 8 patrols had a fun and engaging introduction to camping with Ascent Group, while equipping them with the skills they’ll need to camp independently next year.”
