Perse pupil voice in action at Head’s Breakfast

It’s a brisk but bright Monday morning in the picturesque setting of the Margaret Stubbs Pavilion. Laid out are trays of freshly baked croissants, orange juice and hot chocolates, which are quickly snapped up by our Year 9C form as they arrive and take their seats next to Head, Ed Elliott.

The Head’s Breakfast has begun. The occasion offers a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to command the Head’s undivided attention – with no teachers or staff in sight.

This time is intentionally set aside for form classes and our Head to engage together, to listen and share. It sometimes takes a little while to warm up, both physically and socially. For students, there is much to discuss: the Year 9 curriculum, GCSE options, school trips and activities, IT and catering.

“There are few better settings in which to build relationships and engage with pupils collectively than at a Head’s Breakfast. The concept is simple: we sit and eat together, creating space for dialogue and shared reflection,” explains Head, Ed Elliott.

“Over the years, Head’s Breakfasts have been a source of many good ideas which have made The Perse even better, including and importantly, uniform changes and facility upgrades,” he adds.

“Just as shared family meals boost children’s wellbeing and self-esteem – something psychologists frequently note – our form group breakfasts together can be also beneficial. “

The breakfasts are also a learning opportunity, with the Head explaining the factors that shape School decision making, including the importance of listening to different viewpoints as part of a reasoned and reasonable consultation process.

This event marks the beginning of many such dialogues throughout the year. By welcoming different form groups to the breakfasts, we ensure that pupils have the chance to voice their perspective and play an active role in School life.
