Perse geographers have cool time in Iceland

Arya (Year 10) shares her reflections on the geography field trip to Iceland.

The geography trip to Iceland was unforgettable. From the moment we arrived amid rain and strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 90 kph, we knew we were in for an exhilarating experience.

Despite the challenging weather conditions on the first day, it didn’t dampen our spirits or make it any less enjoyable.

We had the opportunity to visit the iconic Sky Lagoon, where we soaked in the warm waters and marvelled at the stunning views. The Lava Centre provided us with a fascinating demonstration of how lava flows and shapes the landscape. We even had the chance to walk up a volcano, an experience that left us in awe of nature’s power. We also witnessed the geysers erupting with boiling water and steam, a thrilling spectacle of the earth’s geothermal activity.

Exploring the volcanic crater, walking on the black sand beach and relaxing in a hot spring were moments of tranquillity amid the rugged Icelandic terrain. The bridge between continents symbolised the unique geological features of Iceland, while souvenir shopping allowed us to bring a piece of this incredible country back home.

We also had the opportunity to visit a power plant and a greenhouse, learning about Iceland’s innovative use of renewable energy and sustainable farming practices. The glaciers, with their icy landscapes, were awe-inspiring, reminding us of the fragility of our planet.

An exhibition and memorial of a volcanic eruption served as a reminder of Iceland’s geological volatility and the resilience of its people. We even had the chance to interact with Icelandic horses, known for their gentle nature and unique gait. Walking behind a waterfall and exploring the harbour and ferry added a touch of adventure to our trip, making us feel like true explorers.

Of course, no trip to Iceland would be complete without chasing the perfect Instagram picture. We would challenge ourselves to climb 500 stairs to reach breathtaking viewpoints that offered stunning panoramic views of the Icelandic landscape. The sense of accomplishment and the awe-inspiring scenery made it all worth it.

However, it wasn’t just the activities that made the trip unforgettable, it was the camaraderie among the students and the special bond we formed with our teachers.

Each evening, we would gather, sharing stories and laughter, and getting to know each other better and outside a school environment. These moments of connection and friendship are what made the trip truly special – and, of course, there were the countless photos we took throughout our journey.

From dramatic landscapes to candid shots of our group, each picture captured a unique moment and served as a visual reminder of the incredible experiences we had.
