Highlands mission prepares Perse students for Bolivia adventure

Twenty-five Perse students set out for the Scottish Highlands in preparation for the forthcoming PES Summit 12 expedition to Bolivia.

They travelled to Aviemore to get a taste of what to expect when they climb the great heights of the Andes this summer, not just from a physical perspective, but also to test their mental resolve and resilience. Despite strong winds and snow, the students remained undeterred and dedicated themselves to training.

The pupils focused on mastering the use of ice axes, ropes and crampons – crucial tools for their upcoming high-altitude endeavours – and were thoroughly educated on avalanche risks and identifying potential hazards.

They practiced safe techniques for ascending and descending steep slopes, learning how to maintain balance and secure footholds using crampons and ice axes. Anchor systems were another focal point, with students mastering the set-up and use of various anchors to ensure safety on precarious slopes. Additionally, they learned mechanical advantage systems, setting up pulleys to safely extract individuals from crevasses, a vital skill in glacier travel.

Emergency management skills were also put to the test through varied and challenging medical scenarios, such as trauma care, where students learned to address injuries sustained from falls or accidents.

They also dealt with altitude sickness, understanding the signs and symptoms of more serious conditions. After stabilising the ‘casualties’, pupils practised their evacuation techniques, co-ordinating with outside assistance and executing improvised stretcher carries over remote terrain.

Strong winds and cold conditions meant the group stayed at lower elevations, but this did not deter the group. They quickly adapted to managing their equipment and themselves with great efficiency, demonstrating their ability to remain focused and effective in adverse conditions.

Perse Director of Outdoor Education Ben Parker said: “The pupils learned an immense amount, honing crucial skills for the upcoming high-altitude expedition to Bolivia.

“They showcased remarkable flexibility and resilience in the face of fierce weather conditions. This experience has not only prepared them physically, but also mentally for the challenges ahead. Their dedication and perseverance are truly commendable.”
