Perse Giving Day 2024 raises huge total

Perse Giving Day 2024 has raised a six-figure sum to support the school’s work in making a difference to young people’s lives.

The 36-hour event saw £104,346 given to support The Perse’s bursaries and community partnerships funds courtesy of the backing of more than 240 individual donors.

During Giving Day, a series of fundraising challenges were successfully completed, allowing further funding to be unlocked towards the campaign.

More than 1,615 items of food and vital goods were donated by the Perse community for Cambridge City Foodbank as part of the Pupil Challenge, ensuring an extra £2,500 boost to the appeal.

With Giving Day tying in with the annual Old Perseans (OP) Sports Festival, one generous donor doubled the first £1,000 raised during the event.

Meanwhile, the OP Sports Challenge saw students old and new, as well as staff, take part in the 10-mile Roman Road Run with £1 being unlocked for every mile run up to a total of £250.

Hungry OP athletes were able to enjoy a tasty treat with the Sixth Form Charities Committee running a bake sale which raised £95 for the appeal.

The PPA Challenge was also met with the Perse Parents’ Association generously matching the first £1,000 donated by parents on Giving Day.

Meanwhile, generous audience members donated just over £190 to the Giving Day collection at the Sixth Form production of Shakespeare in Love.

Highlighting The Perse’s commitment to community partnerships, King’s Hedges School pupils explored the local history of Castle Camps and Bartlow Hills during a Giving Day trip led by Head Ed Elliott, Assistant Head Emma Rothwell and Sixth Form mentors.

After returning to the Upper, the King’s Hedges visitors got to grips with the climbing wall and toasted marshmallows with the Perse outdoor pursuits team.

Perse Head of Development Erin Charles, whose team led the appeal, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who supported our Giving Day this year, whether by bringing in items for the foodbank, taking part in the Roman Road Run, baking cakes, or making a donation.

“The money raised will enable us to ensure that the fantastic educational opportunities at The Perse are open to even more young people.”

Perse Head Ed Elliott commented: “A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Giving Day. I’m delighted that we raised well over £100,000 and were also able to make donations of more than 1,615 items to Cambridge City Foodbank.

“Donor support makes a huge financial and practical difference and it’s also a great affirmation of our charitable work.”
