Perse team wins national Imperial Science in Medicine Cardiovascular Prize
Six Upper Sixth students from The Perse have won the national Imperial Science in Medicine Cardiovascular Prize after presenting an innovative proposal for the early detection of cardiovascular disease.

We are delighted to congratulate Upper Sixth students Rachel, Sneha, Sumi, Saisha, Projjol and Leena, who have won the national Imperial Science in Medicine Cardiovascular Prize.
The annual competition, organised by Imperial College London’s National Heart and Lung Institute and the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence, challenges sixth form students to develop innovative solutions to real-world healthcare problems by combining science, technology, engineering and medicine.

The Perse team impressed a panel of academics and cardiologists with their proposal for a clip-on retinal scanning system designed to identify early warning signs of cardiovascular disease. Their project also explored how the technology could help address gender imbalances in existing cardiovascular risk scoring, improving the accuracy of early diagnosis for a wider range of patients.
As part of the competition, students were required to design a scientific poster and present their ideas to expert judges. Their presentation was praised for its professionalism and the strength of its research, ultimately securing first place in the national competition.

Their success reflects the creativity, collaboration and scientific curiosity that pupils develop through opportunities extending beyond the classroom. By tackling a complex medical challenge and presenting their findings to leading specialists, the team demonstrated the high level of analytical thinking and communication skills required in scientific research and healthcare innovation.
The Perse enjoyed further success in the competition, with another Upper Sixth team comprising Sophie, Stephen, Kevin, Michelle and Helios shortlisted as national finalists for their poster submission, SOMA.

Congratulations to all those involved in this outstanding achievement.
