Pastoral Care

Pastoral care underpins all that we do at the Perse Prep; it is about helping each pupil to flourish. For us, this means developing the whole child – helping pupils to be happy and confident, to connect with others, and to grow in independence as they navigate the inevitable ups and downs of school life.

We like to think about wellbeing as something that is caught, taught and sought at the School.

It is caught through the culture of everyday life here. Friendships, form and House life, lessons, play, sport, performance and clubs all help pupils develop a sense of belonging and contribution, while learning the importance of kindness, respect and responsibility towards others.

Daily Form Time gives pupils time to talk and have their voice heard, while helping Form Teachers know the pupils well. Led by our Assistant Head (Pastoral), pastoral care is a shared responsibility across the Prep. Our wider pastoral team brings perspectives together around each child, helping us notice changes early, understand what may sit behind them and respond appropriately.

…my child is known to staff, and effort and skill have gone into getting to understand him. This has helped him to feel secure and settled.

It is also explicitly taught because we want pupils not simply to be supported, but to understand how to look after their own wellbeing. Emotional Wellbeing lessons, PSHE and assemblies develop self-awareness, resilience and practical strategies. Our annual Wellbeing Week brings this to life through activities from BMX biking and raft building to Tai Chi and orienteering, helping children try new things, connect with each other and build confidence. Pupils also learn how sleep, physical activity and the nutritious food prepared onsite affect how they feel and function. We work closely with parents too; our pastoral talks, newsletters and guidance help home and school work together and families are always welcomed to our Friday assembly.

And it is increasingly sought, as our pupils become more confident in recognising when they need support and knowing where to find it. Alongside their key adults, the children can access the Wellbeing Hub, an open-door space to talk or take time out. Additional specialist support is available from our School Counsellor, Pastoral Co-ordinator and trained ELSA, while our weekly PALMS team brings together pastoral, learning support and health expertise, so that each child’s needs can be understood as a whole.

Our pastoral aim is for pupils to leave the Prep knowing themselves better, trusting their own judgement and feeling ready to meet the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Teachers consistently provide constructive feedback and foster a culture that enables pupils to feel secure and have the self-esteem to refine their work and take measured risks.

Healthy Eating

Our in-house caterers Lodestone House prepare fresh food daily on-site. There’s always a hot meal, vegetarian option, salad and fresh fruit available.

Catering staff and teachers encourage children to choose a balanced meal, try new food and develop good table manners.

Please talk to our admissions team if your child has specific dietary needs so that our team can work with you to manage their needs safely.
