‘Superstars’ hit the stage for Perse Charity Lip Sync Battle

Students and staff strutted their stuff in an evening of fun and laughs at this year’s Perse Charity Lip Sync Battle.

While performers gave hilarious takes on the biggest stars in pop, more than £930 was raised for teenage mental health charity Stem 4.

Assistant Heads Cheryl Buchanan and Oli Peat took on compering duties as the Sixth Form tutors got the show on the road with their regular upbeat opener Koukou Move.

From Backstreet Boys to Bamboleo by the Gipsy Kings, Upper Sixth form groups, sports teams and subject classes staged a wide range of entertaining star turns.

The ‘Melodic Medlians’ mashed up Horrible Histories with novelty pop as Gangnam Style became ‘Norman Style’, while the traditional Senior Prefects performance saw them mime and dance their way through a movie-themed medley.

Computer science staff weren’t afraid to take on Ghostbusters, while the maths department had Elton John’s numerous fashion styles covered with their rendition of I’m Still Standing.

However, the coveted title of ‘most entertaining’ went to the badminton team with their fun-filled version of Let It Go from Frozen.

There was no competition for the ‘most innovative’ prize with Sourish (Upper Sixth)’s solo performance combining traditional Indian dance, an AI-generated farewell ode to The Perse and a rap featuring the digits of Pi!

Meanwhile, Head of Sixth Form Guy Couper-Marsh and Head of Upper Six David Bennett claimed the ‘most horrifying’ award as what initially appeared to be an introduction to an assembly quickly morphed into the Grease soundtrack!

Maths teacher Lilian Blaxill, who organised the event, also paid a poignant tribute to the late Clare Bigg, who taught at The Perse from 1992 to 2013 and sadly passed away in March.

She said: “I spoke about the characteristics she embodied and related it to what we were doing with Lip Sync with the main thing being kindness. That was reflected in the kindness that the audience showed to the acts.

“I believe this is the best Lip Sync we’ve ever had in terms of the variety of performances and the warmth of the reception for all those taking part.”
