Perse climbers scale tough challenges in north Wales

Perse students got to grips with an action-packed Development Climbing Club expedition in north Wales.

The group of 16 pupils began their adventure in the heart of Snowdonia, tackling multiple 15-metre climbs and participating in top-rope anchor systems before abseiling down a vertical rock face.

They navigated exposed routes which helped build confidence in the crag environment and reinforced fundamental climbing skills.

Next, the group visited Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, where they were welcomed with a presentation on the centre’s history before taking part in workshops on conducting a vertical rescue using a 3:1 pulley system, performing a stretcher carry and administering emergency first aid, and rescuing individuals in flood conditions using various flotation devices.

Before heading home, the pupils took on one final challenge known as canyoning, where they leaped into plunge pools from varying heights, slid down natural rock chutes and zip-lined across waterfalls to cap off an unforgettable experience.

Perse outdoor education instructor Kit Rowland, who led the expedition, said: “This diverse and immersive trip reinforced key mountaineering and rescue skills while pushing pupils beyond their comfort zones. The experience has further prepared them for future expeditions and personal climbing challenges.”
