Research

Research is a defining feature of Sixth Form life at The Perse. Almost every Lower Sixth student undertakes a formal research project, giving them the opportunity to explore a topic that reflects their interests, passions or future career aspirations. The breadth of projects undertaken across the Sixth Form is remarkable and reflects the curiosity and ambition of our students.

Independent learning and academic development

Research projects help students develop the skills needed for university and beyond. Students learn how to find and evaluate appropriate sources of information, manage their time effectively, organise complex projects and communicate their findings clearly. They also develop critical evaluation, synthesis, independence and the confidence to pursue their own ideas.

Alongside the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), The Perse offers its own research qualification, the Rouse Project. Designed to capture the best aspects of the EPQ while requiring less curriculum time, the Rouse enables students to undertake substantial independent research alongside four A levels. Students benefit from guidance from specialist subject supervisors throughout the process.

Research beyond the classroom

Our extensive programme of subject societies plays an important role in supporting research. These societies help students broaden their knowledge, discover new interests and develop the confidence to ask ambitious questions.

Where appropriate, the School also supports students in pursuing opportunities beyond the classroom. In recent years, some students have undertaken collaborative research projects with external organisations and gone on to publish their work.

Recent highlights

The annual Rouse Presentation Evening showcases the breadth and depth of research taking place across the Sixth Form, with students presenting projects on an extraordinary range of topics.

Students also achieve excellent results in the EPQ, with around 90% of grades awarded at A* or A each year, reflecting the high quality of independent research undertaken at The Perse.
