Perse pupils sleep out to help homelessness charity

More than 70 Year 9 pupils took part in a sponsored sleepout to raise funds for Emmaus Cambridge.
They have made more than £4,100 for the local homelessness charity after spending the night bedded down around the Upper site.
Five Emmaus staff and companions – formerly homeless people who have been supported by the charity – came along to speak to pupils about the work of the cause and share their experiences of living on the streets, as well as advice for those taking part.

A group of 13 Sixth Form volunteers also helped on the night, as pupils participated in a game where they had to earn ‘money’ to buy cardboard to sleep on by doing different tasks.
In addition, three of the Y9 pupils – Olivia, Amy and Lei – helped the Emmaus appeal by busking in Cambridge city centre, making a further £40 for the cause.
