Gold standard for Perse students on Italy Duke of Edinburgh trip

The Aosta Valley in Italy was the destination for 37 Perse students as they embarked on their Duke of Edinburgh Gold qualifying expedition.

Teams navigated a challenging circuit through high mountain passes, covering approximately 45 kilometres and ascending a total of 2,500 metres. Throughout the expedition, the pupils demonstrated self-sufficiency, carrying all the food and equipment needed along the journey.

Despite the unseasonably hot weather for the time of year and altitude, the conditions remained excellent, allowing the pupils to fully immerse themselves in the stunning alpine environment.

Along their route, they experienced the tranquillity of wild camping beside serene high mountain lakes, with one night spent at a campsite equipped with showers offering a brief respite.

The students worked closely within their groups, showcasing exceptional leadership and teamwork skills during the long days of hiking.

Perse Director of Outdoor Education Ben Parker said: “It was inspiring to witness their perseverance and compassion as they consistently put the needs of others before their own. This real-world setting provided ample opportunities for the pupils to develop and demonstrate their capabilities.

“At the end of the expedition, they returned with a profound sense of achievement and cherished memories of their time spent in the beautiful mountainous landscape.

“The experience not only tested their physical endurance, but also fostered a deep appreciation for nature and the value of mutual support and collaboration.”
