Perse Prep and Pelican enjoy Poetry Day visit from top writer

Record-breaking writer Laura Mucha thrilled children at The Perse Prep and Pelican with a special visit to celebrate National Poetry Day.
Laura, who holds the Guinness World Record for Largest Poetry Lesson after staging a session with 43,516 pupils from more than 500 schools last year, put on livewire performances full of laughs for youngsters at both the Prep and Pelican.
An author of a range of poetry and prose for both adults and children, Laura told enthralled pupils from the Prep and Fawcett Primary School how she had got into writing after initially pursuing a career as a lawyer.
She explained the painstaking process of how she goes about drafting her verses, having done immense amounts of research into her topic matter before putting pen to paper.
Laura also spoke about how she gets involved in the look and design of her anthologies before concluding her talk with a reading of some of her poems about scary creatures.
Year 6 had the opportunity to take part in fun-filled workshops as Laura invited them to brainstorm phrases that summed up good and bad experiences to build a whole-class poem entitled Thought Machine.
Laura rounded off her trip to the Prep by taking part in an interview with members of Year 6 Journalism Club before heading to the Pelican to talk to children about her passion for poetry.
