National Biology competition success for Perse students

We are delighted to announce that two groups of Perse students have come second for their submissions to the ‘Imperial Science in Medicine’ poster competition.
Perse students Ianthe, Molly, Ellie, Carla and Carrie (all Upper Sixth) submitted their poster under the ‘British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Prize’ theme and proposed an innovative app-based strategy to tackle dietary-derived cardiac disease. After reaching the national finals, they gave a presentation to a team of Imperial cardiologists.
Another team, lead by Upper Sixth pupils Alexandra, Vivek, Lyla, Hyung, Nikhil and Niall, created their poster as part of the ‘Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre’ theme. Together, they produced a highly inventive concept for a medical device named ‘MucoShield’ which would help alleviate the symptoms of oral mucositis, a common side-effect of chemotherapy.
The oncologists who questioned the team in the final were incredibly complimentary (“get this device made now!”).
Looking back on their journey, the students reflected on the enjoyment of working as part of a team, as well as their growth in confidence and communicating complex ideas.
Both teams had been working on these ideas since March and were delighted that all their research, revision and teamwork paid off as they were both awarded second place nationally for their respective categories.
