Perse Engineering Club secures best-ever finish in Greenpower race series

The Perse Engineering Club travelled to Lotus Hethel last week to compete in the Greenpower race series, an exciting national motorsport competition focused on engineering and sustainability. The team achieved their best finish yet, completing 10 laps in the one-hour endurance challenge.

Greenpower Education Trust is a UK-based charity that encourages young people to explore science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) through the challenge of designing, building and racing electric cars. More than 10,000 students take part in Greenpower events every year, with races held at motorsport venues across the UK. Teams either build kit cars provided by Greenpower or design their own vehicles to Greenpower’s regulations.

At the Lotus Hethel event on Sunday, Perse students completed an endurance race designed to see how far the students can drive in an hour in the batter-powered cars they have built. The Perse team completed 10 laps of the circuit, earning 5th place in the kit car category and 9th place overall.

The day provided students with valuable hands-on engineering experience, requiring teamwork, problem-solving, and communication throughout the event. The team worked hard to ensure the car was ready to race and had the reliability to run for the full hour. Supported enthusiastically by The Perse Pelican mascot, the team enjoyed a memorable day and celebrated a record result for the club.

Reflecting on the success of the event and the club’s progress this year, Sam Patterson said “This has been a big year for Engineering Club – it is the first time that we have entered two national competitions: the UK Rocketry Challenge (UKROC) and the Greenpower Race series.”

Following their success, The Perse Engineering Club is already preparing for future competitions and planning next year’s projects in the workshop.
