Mandarin
Mandarin at The Perse Sixth Form provides students with the opportunity to build on their GCSE studies and develop the language skills, cultural understanding and confidence needed to use Mandarin in higher education, international study and professional settings. Through preparation for the internationally recognised HSK (汉语水平考试) qualification, students strengthen their proficiency in one of the world’s most widely spoken languages while gaining a valuable qualification recognised around the globe.
Developing language proficiency
The HSK course is designed for students who have already studied Mandarin and wish to continue developing their skills. Throughout the course, students build their confidence in reading, writing, listening and speaking, while deepening their understanding of Chinese language and culture.
The HSK qualification is divided into a series of levels, ranging from HSK 1 to HSK 6, with additional advanced examinations available at levels 7-9. Generally, a minimum of HSK 4 is required for overseas study and employment opportunities in China. Achieving an HSK qualification demonstrates language proficiency as well as valuable transferable skills, helping students stand out in university and career applications.
Enrolment is subject to demand and students may be required to complete a proficiency assessment to ensure they are placed at the most appropriate level.
Learning beyond the classroom
Students are encouraged to extend their learning beyond lessons through engagement with Chinese-speaking cultures and communities. The department provides a range of enrichment resources, including recommended apps, podcasts, newspaper articles, television programmes and films in Mandarin.
Students receive a curated programme of extension resources at the start of each academic year, which is regularly updated. Enrichment activities also celebrate major Chinese festivals, while visiting speakers share their experiences of studying, working and travelling in China, helping students gain a broader perspective on the language and its global significance.
Future pathways
Studying Mandarin develops communication skills, cultural awareness and international understanding. The HSK qualification provides formal recognition of Mandarin proficiency and can support applications for university courses, international study opportunities and careers where language skills and global perspectives are increasingly valued.
