VALUED & SUPPORTED

Learning Support & SEN

At the Prep, high expectations are combined with carefully tailored support so that every pupil has the opportunity to participate fully, grow in confidence and make strong progress.

All pupils are screened for potential learning needs during their time in Years 3–6, with pupils joining the School assessed at the start of each year. Teachers’ observations, information from parents and the School’s wider assessment and reporting systems also help us build a rounded understanding of each child.

Where a possible learning need is identified, the Head of Learning Support for the Pelican and Prep may recommend a period of classroom support and monitoring, followed where appropriate by an internal assessment. Support may include adapted classroom strategies, additional resources and targeted one-to-one or small-group sessions with a learning support assistant.

Individual pupil profiles help teachers understand a pupil’s needs and consistently apply the approaches that support their learning. Where further specialist advice would be beneficial, we may recommend an assessment by an educational psychologist or another external professional. Pupils are encouraged, where appropriate, to contribute to their support plans, helping them understand how they learn best and become increasingly independent.
