Philosophy, Ethics & Religion

Why study Philosophy, Ethics and Religion at The Perse?

Philosophy, Ethics and Religion encourages pupils to explore some of life’s biggest questions. Through the study of philosophy, ethics and the world’s major religions, pupils develop the confidence to think critically, debate respectfully and understand perspectives different from their own. The subject challenges pupils to ask not only what people believe, but why those beliefs matter.

Thinking deeply

Lessons are built around enquiry, discussion and thoughtful debate. Pupils explore themes such as justice, freedom, suffering, love, equality and faith, drawing on philosophy, ethical theory and religious traditions to develop well-reasoned arguments. By engaging with academic texts, scriptural sources and contemporary issues, they learn to evaluate evidence, question assumptions and communicate their ideas with clarity and empathy.

Beyond the classroom

Learning continues through Philosophy Society, Medical Ethics Society and a programme of educational visits, including Cambridge Central Mosque and other places of worship. Off-timetable events such as World Philosophy Day encourage pupils to engage with contemporary issues, while essay competitions and pupil-led presentations provide opportunities to develop scholarship beyond the classroom.

Recent highlights

Perse pupils regularly achieve success in national essay competitions, including the Theology Philosophy and Religion (ISRSA) Essay competition and the Minds Underground™ Essay Competition, where a recent pupil received a High Commendation. The department continues to inspire pupils to become thoughtful, articulate and compassionate thinkers.
