Music

Why study Music at The Perse?

Music at The Perse combines creativity, intellectual challenge and outstanding performance opportunities. Whether composing, performing or analysing music, pupils develop confidence, discipline and expressive skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how music connects cultures, ideas and emotions. Music nurtures creativity alongside analytical thinking, making it a subject that complements both the sciences and the humanities.

Making music together

Music is a vibrant and collaborative experience. Lessons encourage pupils to listen critically, perform confidently and compose imaginatively, while exploring a wide range of musical styles and traditions. Every pupil is challenged to develop as both a musician and a creative thinker, building resilience, communication skills and the confidence to perform. Whether studying GCSE or A level Music or participating purely for enjoyment, pupils become part of a thriving musical community.

Beyond the classroom

With around 70 ensembles, there is something for every musician, from orchestras, choirs and jazz bands to chamber groups, wind bands and specialist instrumental ensembles. Pupils perform regularly in concerts, competitions and recitals, both at school and at prestigious venues including Saffron Hall and Ely Cathedral. The annual Perse Musician of the Year competition is a highlight of the musical calendar, attracting hundreds of entries each year.

Recent highlights

Music continues to be one of The Perse’s flagship subjects. In 2025, every GCSE and A level Music pupil achieved the highest possible grade (Grade 9 or A*). In 2026, more than 330 pupils entered the Perse Musician of the Year competition, while senior ensembles performed at Saffron Hall in Gloria! The Perse School in Concert.
