Mathematics
Think differently
Mathematics at The Perse is intellectually ambitious. We encourage pupils to think deeply, reason clearly and enjoy the challenge of solving difficult problems, developing the confidence to tackle unfamiliar questions rather than simply applying learnt methods. Our aim is not only to help pupils become fluent mathematicians, but to foster curiosity, resilience and the satisfaction that comes from discovering elegant solutions.
Learning beyond the textbook
Our teachers are passionate mathematicians who enjoy exploring ideas alongside their pupils. Lessons are characterised by discussion, investigation and rich problem-solving, with open-ended questions, collaborative projects and independent exploration encouraging pupils to think beyond the textbook. Mathematical curiosity is part of everyday departmental life, creating a community where challenging ideas are welcomed and perseverance is celebrated.
Beyond the classroom
Learning continues well beyond lessons. Pupils regularly take part in UK Maths Trust challenges, while Olympiad Club develops creative problem-solving through demanding mathematical puzzles. The Maclaurin Society, a student-led lecture programme, brings together pupils and teachers to explore fascinating mathematical ideas beyond the curriculum. Mentoring opportunities, competitions and extension projects allow every pupil to continue stretching themselves.
Recent highlights
This culture of intellectual challenge is reflected in outstanding success. Perse teams regularly qualify for the National Finals of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge and were National Champions in 2025. In individual competitions, around ten pupils in each year group qualify for the Junior and Intermediate Olympiads every year, with several winning medals and achieving top scores in the East of England.
