Mandarin

Why study Mandarin at The Perse?

Mandarin is one of the world’s most influential languages, opening doors to one of the richest and most dynamic cultures on the planet. At The Perse, pupils develop the confidence to communicate in Mandarin while gaining a deeper understanding of China’s history, traditions and contemporary society. Alongside language skills, pupils develop resilience, cultural awareness and intellectual curiosity, preparing them to engage confidently in an increasingly interconnected world.

Learning language through culture

Learning Mandarin is an immersive and rewarding experience. Pupils develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while exploring Chinese customs, festivals, literature and everyday life. They learn to recognise characters, understand the structure of the language and communicate with increasing confidence, discovering how language and culture are closely intertwined. Lessons encourage pupils to embrace challenge, think differently and develop a genuine appreciation of one of the world’s oldest civilisations and fastest-changing modern societies.

Beyond the classroom

The department brings language learning to life through cultural celebrations, enrichment activities and opportunities to engage with native speakers. Pupils take part in events marking Chinese festivals, enjoy hands-on cultural experiences and benefit from opportunities to develop their spoken Mandarin beyond the classroom. Educational visits, exchanges and links with international partners help pupils experience the language in authentic contexts while building confidence as global citizens.

Recent highlights

Mandarin pupils consistently achieve excellent examination results and many continue their study into the Sixth Form and beyond. Whether pursuing languages, international relations, business, engineering or science, pupils leave with valuable communication skills, cultural understanding and the confidence to engage with one of the world’s most important global languages.
