Why study Geography at The Perse?

Geography helps pupils understand the rapidly changing world around them. From climate change and sustainability to global development and urban growth, pupils explore the physical and human processes that shape our planet while developing the analytical and investigative skills needed to tackle some of today’s biggest challenges.

Exploring the world

Our Geography curriculum connects classroom learning with contemporary issues, encouraging pupils to think critically about the environments and societies in which we live. Geography combines scientific understanding with social awareness, giving pupils the confidence to analyse evidence, interpret data and appreciate different perspectives. Along the way, they develop highly transferable skills in research, communication and problem-solving that are valued across a wide range of careers.

Beyond the classroom

Fieldwork and practical investigation are central to geographical learning. Pupils explore sustainable forestry in Thetford Forest, investigate river processes at Hobson’s Brook, examine sustainable transport and urban development in Cambridge, and undertake a residential field course to the Jurassic Coast. They can also participate in support sessions and national competitions such as the Royal Geographical Society’s Young Geographer of the Year.

Recent highlights

The department consistently achieves outstanding examination results, including some of the highest GCSE outcomes nationally. In 2026, one pupil achieved the highest OCR A GCSE Geography score in the country. Pupils also regularly contribute to the student-led Purple Planet geography journal. Geography continues to inspire pupils to engage with the world’s most pressing environmental and social issues, preparing them for further study and an exceptionally broad range of future careers.
