Why study French at The Perse?
French at The Perse is about much more than mastering grammar and vocabulary. It is an opportunity to engage with one of the world’s great languages, spoken across five continents and at the heart of international diplomacy, business, literature and culture. Pupils develop confidence in communicating in French while discovering how language shapes ideas, identity and different ways of seeing the world.
How we think
Our French teaching combines intellectual rigour with cultural exploration. Alongside developing linguistic accuracy and fluency, pupils encounter Francophone literature, film, history and contemporary issues, helping them appreciate the diversity of French-speaking communities around the world. French lessons encourage curiosity, thoughtful discussion and the confidence to express ideas with precision, preparing pupils not only for examinations but for life beyond School.
Beyond the classroom
Pupils can extend their learning through the French Society, where literature, film and wider Francophone culture are explored in greater depth. They enjoy guest lectures on languages and linguistics, opportunities to mentor younger pupils through outreach activities, and regular exchanges with partner schools in France. Visits to the Côte d’Azur, Annecy, exhibitions, university events and Francophone film screenings bring French language learning vividly to life.
