Perse Prep football team strike for regional success

The Perse Prep boys’ U11 football team clinched the Plate honours after an impressive display at the IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) regional finals.

They travelled to Bishop’s Stortford College for the tournament and lost their first group game 1-0 to Beechwood Park.

Goalless draws against Duncombe School and Aldwickbury School followed before completing a fiercely contested pool stage with a 1-0 victory over St George’s School.

That win earned the Prep team joint-second in the group with Aldwickbury and with matching records, they had to take part in a penalty shootout to decide who would progress to the main Cup knockout stage. Unfortunately, the Prep narrowly missed out as they lost 2-1 on spot kicks.

The boys moved into the Plate competition and bounced back with a 5-0 triumph against St John’s in the quarter-finals.

They continued their fine run of form with a 2-0 win over Langley School in the semi-finals before defeating St George’s by the same scoreline in the final.

Prep Director of Sport Dan Nicholes said: “After a slightly nervy start, the team performed well and showed their character and strength, whilst playing some very attractive football.

“They only conceded one goal throughout the entire competition and confidence is high going into the ISFA (Independent Schools FA) regional finals on Wednesday.”
