Perse Physics Technician shares expertise in national science journal

Senior Physics Technician Tom Ramsay has had an article published in School Science Review, a leading journal for science educators, highlighting how 3D printing can be used to support science teaching in schools.

In the article, Using 3D printing to support science teaching, Tom explores the ways in which 3D printing has enhanced practical science teaching at The Perse over the past eight years. Drawing on first-hand experience, he outlines how custom-designed equipment can improve demonstrations, increase reliability in experiments and help technicians develop innovative solutions to classroom challenges.

The article features a range of examples created at The Perse, including density cubes used to explore buoyancy, simplified vernier callipers, insulating beaker lids for GCSE practical work, laser diffraction apparatus and a redesigned aluminium loudspeaker demonstration. Many of these designs were developed to improve the learning experience for pupils while also making practical activities safer, more efficient and more cost-effective.

Tom discusses the growing accessibility of 3D printing technology and its potential to transform the work of school science technicians. Reflecting on The Perse’s experience, he argues that investment in 3D printing can deliver significant benefits for science departments, from reducing costs to enabling more creative experimental design.

Congratulations to Tom Ramsay on this excellent achievement and for sharing The Perse’s innovative approach to science education with a wider audience.
