A summer of outstanding international success for Perse Chemistry students
Perse students enjoyed an outstanding summer of international success in chemistry, earning recognition at prestigious competitions in Uzbekistan and South Korea. Lower Sixth student Roy won a Silver Medal while representing the UK at the International Chemistry Olympiad, while a team of six Perse students received an Honourable Mention at the International Chemistry Tournament.
Perse chemists have celebrated an exceptional summer, with students achieving success at major international competitions in both Uzbekistan and South Korea.
Lower Sixth student Roy was selected as one of four students to represent the United Kingdom at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Uzbekistan. Competing against many students a year older than himself, he earned an impressive Silver Medal in one of the world’s most demanding chemistry competitions, which tests both theoretical knowledge and practical problem-solving skills.
Following his success, Roy has established an Olympiad Club at the School to encourage other students to explore chemistry beyond the curriculum and develop their interest in the subject.
Meanwhile, six Perse students, competing as “The Perse-cipitates”, travelled to South Korea for the International Chemistry Tournament at Korean Minjok Leadership Academy.
Having progressed from the inaugural UK Chemistry Tournament, the team joined students from across three continents to present, defend and evaluate solutions to complex open-ended chemistry challenges. The team finished 10th overall and received an Honourable Mention, narrowly missing out on a Team Bronze Award. Read Sophie’s first-hand account of the trip to South Korea to discover more about the tournament and the experiences of the Perse team here.
Congratulations also go to Rachel, who was awarded an individual Bronze Award in recognition of her contributions throughout the tournament.
Alongside their competition successes, students had the opportunity to collaborate with young scientists from around the world and experience South Korean culture through activities including traditional calligraphy, archery and learning to play the gayageum.
Congratulations to all the students involved on their outstanding achievements and for representing the School so positively on the international stage.
