The Perse School is a charitable company and one of the country’s leading independent day schools.
Our vision is to love learning and strive for the greater good. We educate girls and boys from 3-18 on three sites in Cambridge: the Pelican Nursery and Pre-Prep, the Prep and the Upper. Children thus progress through three different schools, and have all the benefits of being part of one larger institution with an integrated curriculum and pastoral care system.

In the last decade we have invested over £40 million in new and improved facilities across the three sites. This includes two new classroom blocks at the Upper, a Science Centre at the Prep, new sports fields in Little Abington and a Performing Arts Centre.

- The Role
The School is looking for a reliable and motivated individual to join the IT department as an Apprentice. In partnership with Anglia Ruskin University, the School is offering a degree-level apprenticeship in Digital and Technology Solutions. The apprentice will be a full-time employee who also studies part-time at Anglia Ruskin University. While the role of the IT Helpdesk starts in January, the apprenticeship course will start in September 2020.
The IT Department
The IT department is led by the IT Director and is supported by a Network Manager, three Senior Technicians, a Database and Systems Developer and Junior Database Administrator, a Data Administrator and an IT Helpdesk Technician.
The Perse network serves approximately 900 Windows computers and a significant number of wireless devices, running on a fully virtualised network consisting of approximately 60 servers. The School uses many education-specific applications along with industry-standard applications such as Office 365, VMWare, Exchange, SharePoint and SQL Server.
All members of the IT department are expected to provide support to all three sites which may involve visiting other sites in Cambridge to effectively complete their duties. In particular, at the direction of the Director of IT or Network Manager, the IT Helpdesk Technician will be located at the Prep School on Trumpington Road regularly during term-time.
As a member of the support staff, the IT Helpdesk Technician’s ultimate line manager will be the Bursar, however day to day responsibility will be to the Director of IT.
The IT Helpdesk Technician’s purpose is to support the teaching staff in their delivery of curricular and extra-curricular IT and to support all staff with their use of IT. This will include setting up and maintaining equipment, troubleshooting problems and providing technical advice and best practice with regards to the use of IT.
The IT Helpdesk Technician supports all three schools. It is therefore a requirement of the role that the IT Helpdesk Technician is flexible in their approach and able to work both independently and as part of the broader IT team.
- Provide excellent customer focused support across a diverse and challenging user community.
- Provide 1st & 2nd line technical support analysing and resolving issues with a wide range of software, hardware and services. Escalating any 3rd line issues to the Senior Technicians.
- Installing, upgrading and configuring Windows and Mac systems using our installation tools.
- Provide software support for computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows to a high level and Apple OS X to a basic level.
- Conduct daily checks to ensure school IT facilities in classrooms, computer rooms and other academic areas are fully operational when required. This will include computers and audio-visual equipment.
- Management of users, passwords, security permissions via Active-Directory.
- Provide IT support during lessons in classrooms and computer rooms.
- Provide hardware support for desktop and laptop computers, mobile devices, printers, photocopiers, peripherals and telephones.
- Technical and booking support for audio visual equipment such as a hall AV systems, laptops and projectors.
- Manage and maintain our sets of class mobile devices (iPads, Chromebooks and laptops) including installing apps and ensuing the software is up to date using mobile device management solutions.
- Manage stock levels of consumables.
- Setup and administer the use of IT during examination periods.
- Carry out administrative and other functions related to the smooth running of the IT department.
The successful candidate must have the following:
For the for Digital & Technology Solutions Degree, candidates must have at least 96 UCAS Tariff points (3xC at A level or equivalent) preferably in Maths or Technical Subjects and 5 GCSEs at C/4 or above to include English and Maths(or equivalent)):
- Ability to prioritise daily tasks effectively;
- Ability and willingness to learn new skills and roles;
- Excellent problem solving skills and initiative;
- Knowledge of audio visual equipment;
- Good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills;
- Empathy for pupils, staff and the community;
- The ability to work effectively both as part of a team, also independently;
- Flexibility and adaptability;
- The ability to work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues within school;
- The ability to manage commitments and deadlines;
- A sense of humour, a ‘can do’ attitude and most importantly the flexibility needed to work effectively in an education environment;
- Experience working in an educational environment would be an advantage.
JOB SPECIFIC TERMS AND CONDITIONS
This post is full time 37.5 hours a week Monday to Friday (exact start and finish times to be agreed) ensuring that IT support and cover is provided between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm.
At times, working additional hours may also be required. No extra payment will be made for this additional time but, where appropriate, time off in lieu will be given, with the agreement of the Director of IT.
Salary: £18,006 per annum.
Paid holiday entitlement is 6 weeks plus Bank holidays per annum – one week to be taken at Easter, one week to be taken at Christmas and four weeks to be taken as agreed with the Director of IT. Holiday may not normally be taken during term time.
