School Description

The Perse School is a charitable company and one of the country’s leading independent day schools.

We educate girls and boys from 3-18 on three sites in Cambridge: the Pelican Nursery and Pre-Prep, the Prep and the Upper. Children thus progress through three different schools, and have all the benefits of being part of one larger institution with an integrated curriculum and pastoral care system.

In the last decade we have invested over £40 million in new and improved facilities across the three sites. This includes two new classroom blocks at the Upper, a Science Centre at the Prep, new sports fields in Little Abington and a Performing Arts Centre (currently under construction).

There are around 400 staff across the whole Perse School (Upper, Prep and Pelican), around half of whom are teachers.

The Role

Grounds Department at The Perse

The grounds department is primarily based at the Upper School on Hills road and consists of seven full time employees including the new appointment.

The grounds department including the Groundskeeper is responsible for the maintenance of the grounds at the Upper School, Prep School, Pelican School, Porson Road sports field, and the Perse Playing Fields at Abington. Occasional work is required to tenanted properties owned by the School. Using the grounds vehicle the team is regularly split into smaller teams to undertake work around all sites.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to

As a member of the support staff, the Groundskeeper’s ultimate line manager will be the Bursar. The Estates Manager is responsible for upkeep of all sites and the grounds team although day to day responsibility will be to the Head Groundskeeper. 

Job Purpose

The requirement of this position is to assist in the day to day upkeep of the hard and soft areas of the grounds, to ensure that the sports pitches are safe and fit for use and all areas appear well maintained at all times across all sites.

Key Responsibilities

The Groundskeeper’s responsibilities will comprise:

  1. Maintenance of the grass including cutting, rolling, strimming, scarifying, aerating, watering, seeding, top dressing, etc.
  2. Marking out of the pitches including erection of goals/nets, corner flags, and boundary markers in line with the school calendar.
  3. Maintenance of paths, borders, hedges and roadways.
  4. Leaf clearance and removal
  5. Early morning clearance of snow and ice from the pathways, pavements and roadways to ensure safe accessfor pedestrians and vehicles.
  6. Early morning and late afternoon gritting and salt application.
  7. Maintenance of artificial all weather surfaces.
  8. Minor machinery maintenance.
  9. Tree/shrub planting as required including use of a digger or tipper.
  10. Keeping records up to date as required by the Head Groundskeeper  
  11. Maintenance of bark chipped areas including reapplication and sweeping.

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

Education/Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant NVQ or similar
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Knowledge

  • At least 3 years relevant experience
  • An knowledge of the maintenance of sports pitches and cricket wickets
  • Safe operation of tractors, ride on mowers, strimmers, etc.
  • An understanding of COSHH requirements
  • An understanding of good practice manual handling techniques 

Skills and Abilities

  • Honesty and reliability
  • Self-motivation
  • Flexible and responsive.
  • Sympathetic to the educational, as well as the practical, requirements of the School. 

JOB SPECIFIC TERMS AND CONDITIONS               

Working Hours

This post is full time post for 37.5 hours per week. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 4.00 pm, with a half hour lunch break (unpaid).

However, you may be required to work such additional hours as the needs of the job require. Extra payment will be made for this additional time or where appropriate, time off in lieu will be given, with the agreement of the Estates Manager.

Salary

The starting salary will be at Scale Point 9 of the Perse support staff salary scale: £18,863 per annum. Salary scales will next be reviewed with effect from September 2017.

Holidays

Paid holiday entitlement is 6 weeks plus Bank holidays per annumone week to be taken at Easter, one week to be taken at Christmas and four weeks to be taken as agreed with the Head Groundskeeper and Estates Manager.
