The Perse School is a charitable company and one of the country’s leading independent day schools.
Our vision is to love learning and strive for the greater good. The values that define our community are: intellectual curiosity and scholarship, endeavour, breadth and balance, and valuing one another. All aspects of the School were classified as outstanding in its 2016 inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
We educate girls and boys from 3-18 on three sites in Cambridge: the Pelican Nursery and Pre-Prep, the Prep and the Upper. Children thus progress through three different schools, and have all the benefits of being part of one larger institution with an integrated curriculum and pastoral care system.
We have a clear learning philosophy. We are academically selective; bright children thrive here and embrace the many opportunities we provide to go beyond the curriculum. We provide a rounded education, with first class opportunities in sport, art, outdoor pursuits, music and drama, and a large number of thriving clubs, societies and extra-curricular activities in which all pupils participate.
The pastoral system is strong and supportive, the student body is diverse, and the atmosphere is open and friendly. We provide more than £1 million each year in means-tested bursaries at the Upper and Prep, to ensure children from all backgrounds can benefit from a Perse education.
In the last decade we have invested over £40 million in new and improved facilities across the three sites. This includes two new classroom blocks at the Upper, a Science Centre at the Prep, new sports fields in Little Abington and a Performing Arts Centre (currently under construction).
There are around 400 staff across the whole Perse School (Upper, Prep and Pelican), around half of whom are teachers.

- The Role
As a member of the Support staff, the Cleaner’s ultimate line manager will be the Bursar, although day to day responsibility will be to the Housekeeping Manager.
Working each evening after the School day has finished, the part-time Cleaners assist the caretaking staff in ensuring a high standard of cleaning throughout the School buildings.
- The Cleaner will undertake cleaning duties in accordance with the area cleaning schedule, duties to include:
- cleaning of all furniture (including the removal of any graffiti), skirting boards, ledges, shelving and high level dusting
- emptying rubbish bins
- hoovering or sweeping and mopping floors as applicable
- removal of marks on walls
- cleaning of internal glazing
- cleaning of sinks and toilet areas as applicable
- The Cleaners may be asked on occasions to assist in the cleaning of other areas during periods of staff absence.
In addition to the items detailed above, the Cleaner will complete a deep clean for their area during school holidays, duties to include:
- moveable items to be moved and cleaned behind (i.e. cupboards on wheels)
- walls to be washed and any marks removed
- blu tack to be removed from walls
- woodwork cleaned (door frames, doors, interior window frames)
- all areas to be checked for cobwebs. An extendable brush is available for high areas
- carpeted areas to be hoovered and spot washed where there are stains

OUTLINE TERMS AND CONDITIONS
This post is part-time, Monday to Friday, hours to suit between 06.15 – 08.15 and 15.30 – 22.00 at the Upper School and 15.30 – 18.00 at the Prep School.
Paid holiday entitlement is based on a full-time entitlement of six weeks per annum plus bank holidays, which must be taken during School holidays as follows: one week at Easter, one week at Christmas, four weeks during the School’s summer holidaysDuring the School holiday periods (other than the paid holiday entitlement as detailed above) the Cleaners are still required to work their contracted hours. However, these hours may be worked over a fewer number of days if desired and with the agreement of the Housekeeping Manager. For example for a one week half term, the Cleaner is required to work ten hours but these hours could be worked over two days at five hours per day.
The hourly rate for this post will be £8.25 per hour (2016/17 rates).
The School operates a defined contribution pension scheme which all support members of staff are eligible to join once they have completed three months’ service and to which the School and the member of staff both contribute. Contributions are currently 13.75% and 6.25% respectively.
The School operates a Group Life Scheme that members of staff are automatically included in on the date of appointment.
The School’s Sports Centre is available for use by staff at various times during the week.
The School is keen to help develop the skills of its staff and looks to provide appropriate training as necessary.
