I love that anything is possible here at The Perse. I enjoy working with staff from different departments; everyone is supportive, collaborative and knowledgeable, and the pupils always come to lessons with lots of ideas and energy. It’s great that all the drama we do here is very student-led.
I studied German and Italian at UCL and I went on to study for a Masters at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, where I was awarded a Sir John Mills Scholarship. It was during my time at UCL that I was able to gain the skills I needed to direct and choreograph; I was involved in all drama opportunities available to me. I got hands-on experience of directing, marketing, scheduling and running a successful performance in the student theatre. I then went on to work as a professional actor, choreographer and theatre practitioner, working in schools and universities. I found that the most satisfying and inspiring work I did was in education.
Part of my role is to expand the role of drama in everyday school life; I work closely alongside other departments, such as music, art, English and sport looking at ways to integrate the subject that way. It’s nice to go into a sport class and show students that there are similarities between sport and dance that they might not have been aware of.
I also enjoy driving interest in extra-curricular drama, opening it up to students who may not have had the opportunity to do drama, or are less confident, showing them how it can be fun and inclusive and how they can develop valuable skills by doing it. It’s a very busy year running up to nine productions!
