The Perse School

Joining Us

Easing inevitable first day nerves

Induction

We provide a comprehensive induction programme before the start of the new school year, to help smooth the transition between schools.

Our induction days introduce new pupils and parents to life at The Perse, providing the opportunity to run through various administrative tasks and allow the pupils to become more familiar with their new surroundings.

New Year 7 and Year 9 pupils are invited to attend two induction days before they start at the Upper – one in June and one in September.

We also hold a Move-Up Day towards the end of the Summer term. This day provides pupils with the opportunity to meet their form tutors and classmates, to familiarise themselves with the layout and set-up of the School and to get to know staff who are to play a large role in their future here. Parents are invited to join their child(ren) towards the end of the day to learn more about the School, meet their son or daughter’s form tutors and to find out about travel options to and from school. You can also view samples of the school uniform.

The next step is our Familiarisation Morning in September, where children begin to discover the routines of school life at the Upper and to work with their tutors on one or two of the practicalities of a new term.

We also like new Year 7 pupils to take part in a Linking Project to help bridge the gap between their primary and secondary education.

Travelling to school

We encourage the use of public transport to travel to school, and many pupils take advantage of the excellent rail services (we are a 15-minute walk or short bus journey from Cambridge station). Students travelling to the School by train can also apply online for a free ‘Student Connect’ card, which gives them discounts when purchasing their season ticket online. For more information about this card, please visit http://www.thameslinkrailway.com/tickets-and-fares/student-connect/ .

We have secure bike storage – note that students must wear a cycle helmet on when cycling to and from school.

We also provide minibus pick-ups from:

  • Cambridge Park and Ride sites (Trumpington, Babraham and Madingley Road) to the Prep and Upper
  • Cambridge railway station to the Prep

These shuttle bus services cost £25 per student, per term.

Uniform

Dress and appearance

During the course of the school day, pupils must wear regulation uniform. While wearing uniform, including on the journey to and from school, pupils are subject to the school rules and appropriate behaviour is required.

  • Hair should be of a natural colour, conventional style and kept off the face at all times
  • Longer hair must be tied back by discreet means for safety in certain lessons (e.g. science, sport)
  • Make-up may be worn, but should be discreet. Nail varnish should be ‘clear’
  • Ear piercing jewellery must be discreet (small plain stud) and only one per ear. No other facial piercings
  • Jewellery should be discreet and must be removed for sport and other appropriate times
  • Pupils (or parents) must gain permission from the Deputy Head (Pupils) for alternative arrangements
Uniform supplier

Their ‘Click & Collect’ service enables you to place an online order before 7pm and collect your purchase from any John Lewis store. Parents have found the collection point next to Trumpington Road Park & Ride very useful. Alternatively, your order can be dispatched to your address within 5 working days.

We trust you will be happy with your purchase but in the event that you need to return any item, returns are processed free of charge through any John Lewis store or through www.johnlewis.com via Royal Mail. If you have any further questions regarding ordering your uniform through johnlewis.com, please speak to Mrs Sims (PupilAdmin@Perse.co.uk) or contact your local branch who will be happy to assist you.

All items of uniform, including footwear and bags must be clearly labelled.

Second hand uniform shop

Please note that some items of uniform may, depending on stock, be available from the Second-Hand School Uniform Shop (please see the School calendar for the dates of these sales). We sell second-hand items of all current school uniform and games kit, including boots and protective kit such as hockey gloves, cricket helmets and shin-pads.

We also hold sample sizes of the school blazer, all the sports tops (rugby, hockey, netball, maori and PE polo) and school hoodie to enable people to try items on for size before going online to order.  Parents are also welcome to send their children to us to try items on unaccompanied and we will give them a form to take home with the size needed clearly marked and giving all the contact details for the School’s online suppliers.

Parents can deliver uniform items they wish to sell via the shop on sale days or by arrangement with Nirmala Suman-Chauhan.  Please be aware that items which are NOT a donation must have each item labelled with name, address and telephone number, using this template. There is no need to assign a price to the item – Mrs Suman-Chauhan will do so. It will be assumed that any unlabelled items are donations.

If you need goods urgently or would like advice, please contact Nirmala Suman-Chauhan on 01638 570427, or email nsc@signetdesign.net.
