Sophie Burrows is a freelance saxophonist and singer. When Sophie joined The Perse in 2010, she quickly became acquainted with the School’s co-curriculum, spending most of her time in the music department. She was an active player and singer in many ensembles and musical productions whilst at school.
After leaving The Perse, Sophie went on to study Classical Saxophone Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Since graduating in 2019, she has been working as a freelance saxophonist and singer as well as General Manager of the Silk Road Music Group. She also works as a peripatetic woodwind teacher at several schools around London.
Sophie’s main musical interests revolve around world music, specifically Gnawa and South Asian music alongside jazz fusion. Her work spans from gigs at jazz clubs and private functions to appearances at major festivals. Performance highlights in 2023 included playing at Cymru Affrica Festival with Agmar Band, Boomtown Festival with Berber Diffusion, Wilderness Festival with Behind the Mask and Silk Road Music Festival in Barbados.
In January 2022, Sophie started a local acapella choir in Walthamstow called the E17 Singers.
