Course Profile: Winston Churchill once proclaimed, ‘History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it’.  This highlights a key philosophical problem with supposed historical truth: history is a creation of the historian, and thus the objectivity of history depends entirely on the integrity and insight of its authors.  This course intends to look at how history has been at worst fabricated by rogues and at best misrepresented by those who should perhaps have known better.  It will look at the philosophy of history, the portrayal of key individuals in the past, and the distortion of events both intentional and unintentional.  It promises to be an interesting adventure and a quest for truth across both history and ancient history.

Redvers double majored in history and classics at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, studying a broad range of history, ancient history and intellectual history.  He teaches history, ancient history and classical studies at the Perse.
