Course Profile: The course will provide opportunities for pupils of all abilities to further develop their love for the sport and their own techniques. The course will feature a variety of fun and exciting ways to learn and develop skills through game play.  Ideas such as quick, diamond and conveyor belt cricket will be played.  There will also be a focus on the 4 main aspects of the game: technical, tactical, physical and mental throughout the sessions.

 

Course Tutor: Dan Nicholes and Jaime Edwards

Daniel is Head of PE, boys’ cricket and football at the Prep.  He is a professional sports coach with qualifications in football, cricket, rugby, netball and gymnastics.  Jaime is Head of girls’ cricket and netball at the Prep.  She oversaw the introduction of cricket for girls three years ago and is passionate about bringing it to as many children as possible.  Daniel and Jaime are both ECB Level 2 cricket coaches.

Course Profile: Would you like to make a product from beginning to end?  Would you like to learn how to design, manufacture and advertise?  Come and see the design process in action in projects such as a pictolight, headphones wrap and mobile phone stand.  Learn how to use design software and manufacturing equipment to see your designs made into reality on the laser cutter and vacuum former.  This course is perfect for students wanting to develop creative flair and understanding of the design and manufacturing processes.

 

Course Tutor: Anna West

Anna obtained a degree in industrial design at Brunel University before working at a number of creative companies working with a range of media including glass, textiles and recycled materials.  She currently teaches design and technology at the Perse and makes her own products in the holidays.

Course Profile: Can you solve the crime?  Are you interested in forensic science?  This course will allow you to work through a mysterious criminal case, learn how to use different analytical techniques such as DNA sequencing, fingerprints, and chromatography to help catch the criminal.  You will learn and implement techniques used by detectives and the police to help solve crimes.  Perfect for those with an interest in this area and science or simply those looking for an exciting and mysterious element to their summer.

 

Course Tutor: Abi Lucas

Abigail obtained a degree in pre-clinical medical studies from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and studied medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital before beginning teaching biology at the Perse in September 2014.  In April 2017, Abigail will leave the Perse to teach at St Faith’s Preparatory School where she will be teaching all three sciences to years 5-8.

Course Profile: Italian lifestyle and cooking with a twist!  This course aims to give young people a taste of Italian food and flavours, including calzone and ravioli, with a fusion of modern, Mediterranean cuisine.  Each day we will make a two or three course meal with recipes of varying complexity and challenge for all cooking abilities.

 

Course Tutor: Dani Creese

Danielle obtained a degree in biology and psychology from the University of Bristol and has been teaching at the Perse for the past six years.  Danielle is a keen cook and has attended several Cambridge Cookery School courses herself as well as teaching cooking at the Perse Summer School.

Course Profile: This course will give you the chance to develop your problem solving and systematic thinking skills in a fun and engaging way.  A range of puzzles and investigations will be looked at throughout the week, alongside the work and theories of some famous mathematicians.  The course is aimed at enthusiastic mathematicians of all abilities.

 

Course Tutor: Eve Bonner

Eve graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2011 and went on to do a PGCE at Jesus College, Cambridge in 2013.  She has since taught in a mainstream school before moving to the Perse in 2015 to teach maths and science.

James Rhatigan

James has a degree in mathematics and philosophy from Durham University, qualified as a teacher from King’s College London, and then completed a Master’s in philosophy from Birkbeck College, London.  He enjoys playing chess and ran the chess club for four years at Whitgift School, and since September 2014 at the Perse.  He has also competed at county level a number of times.

Course Profile: Depending on the pupils who sign up there will be a rotation of sporting activities.  These might include tennis, hockey, cricket, touch rugby, netball, rounders, badminton, basketball, table-tennis etc.

 

Course Tutor: Jack Harvey

Jack Harvey is a games coach at the Perse Prep school.  He coaches all sports to all year groups, all year round including; rugby, football and hockey.  Rugby is his speciality and recently helped assist the Year 6 Perse Prep boys win the County Cup.  Jack graduated from Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC), a renowned rugby/sport institute.  He graduated with first class honours in his degree and was awarded a BSc.  Since then he has coached and played at London Irish rugby club, which has seen him in many schools in South West London.  Upon his re-location to Cambridge he has coached at The Leys, Kings Ely and the Perse Upper.  He also heads up the Perse Pelican PE programme.  Rugby is his passion and he looks forward to passing on his knowledge to the younger generation to enjoy the sport as much as he does.

Ross Hayward is a England Hockey level 2 Coach.  He is a current member of staff at the Perse where he supports the development of players and teams across all age groups.  Ross has coached at Cambridge City Hockey Club for the past 6 years where he has managed to gain promotion into the national league with the ladies first team and finish 3rd in the league in their return season.  He has also supported the development of a number of junior players who have gone on to represent international teams.

Will Bidwell graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University with an honours degree in education studies and history.  In 2015 he completed his PGCE at the University of Cambridge.  Since then he has been a form teacher at the Perse Prep and been actively involved in the games department.  Will has led a range of sports teams and clubs at the Prep including hockey, football and cricket.  He believes that sport should be about having fun whilst developing physical and social skills, regardless of ability!

Course Profile: Tennis for improvers

This course is aimed at those who have played some tennis and have mastered the basics of hitting a ball.  We will work on rallying, serving and competitive play.  If teamwork is for you, why not try doubles and the drills like dingles and red rover which will help you improve your game rapidly.

 

Course Tutor: Charles Harcourt

Charles has been a professional tennis coach since 1997.  He has coached at Cambridge L.T.C (1997-2002), Hills Road Tennis Centre (1999 to date) and Cocks and Hens L.T.C (2011 to date).  He has been the Perse Upper coach since 2011.  Charles has been Professional Tennis Registry qualified since May 1997 and an annual PTR conference attendee since 2006 at Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA.

Course Profile: Fancy a week on the water?  What better way to spend the summer than splashing about learning new skills at Milton Country Park?  The water sports option involves canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding and is run by qualified water sports instructors.  Perhaps the most exciting part of the week for the students will involve the opportunity to build their own rafts and test their seaworthiness out on the lake!  No prior experience needed and all necessary equipment will be provided.

 

Course Tutor: The course tutor will be Mick Woolhouse. Mick is the director of Milton Country Park’s governing charity Cambridge Sport Lake Trust. On top of co-ordinating events at Milton Country Park Mick oversees partnership schemes with local schools and charities. He is a qualified open water swimming coach and stand up paddle board (SUP) instructor with a wealth of experience. He has further interests in triathlon coaching and introduction to bushcraft courses which are run at Milton Country Park.

Course Profile: Do you love creative writing?  Do you love performing?  Are you looking for a way to combine these two interests to nurture your skills and passion further?  This exciting course will cover writing for a variety of performing purposes including playwriting, giving speeches, debating and advertising.  It will use drama to bring your writing alive and you will learn to develop your public speaking talents whilst discovering the joys of writing for performance.

 

Course Tutor: Charlie Bown

Charlie graduated from the University of Bristol with an honours degree in drama: theatre, film and television in 2008.  In 2010 she completed a PGCE at the University of Cambridge.  Since then she has taught in mainstream and special schools in Cambridgeshire and has also taught creative writing to a wide set of audiences.  Charlie has led numerous drama groups, taken shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and worked with young people in schools to inspire a wealth of performances.  She believes that the best learning takes place when children are actively immersed in the subject matter – something that is of great importance when studying writing and the performing arts.

Course Profile: This course offers writers the chance to explore a variety of different styles as we cover aspects of classical, Shakespearean and contemporary theatre.  We will watch and read interesting and exciting pieces of drama to inspire and challenge our creative thinking whilst improving our writing skills through fun devising tasks.  By the end of the week writers will be on their way to writing their first play and have a new perspective on creative writing and the dramatic arts!

 

Course Tutor: Tiggy Tooze

Tiggy teaches english and drama at the Perse Upper and runs the National Theatre’s playwriting course in school.  She has a PGCE from the University of Oxford and has appeared both on and off the stage working behind exciting productions at university, taking groups to Edinburgh Fringe and working with the Perse Players.  Drama is a passion of hers and she believes that an understanding of how plays are written gives even more appreciation and enjoyment – writing a play is not as hard as you think!

Course Profile: The fundamentals coached at the camp are those sanctioned by British Basketball who have developed the key areas of emphasis for entry level and elite basketball in the UK.  Students will learn basketball fundamentals which will cover ball handling, passing, shooting, individual attacking, individual defending, team defence and team offence.  They will also have opportunity to develop transferable skills such as learning the value of teamwork, handling pressure and a competitive work ethic in a focused and disciplined environment.  A basketball fundamentals course is a great way of learning to play basketball and the course is open to both those with little or no experience of the game but also those with some experience who are looking to enhance their skills.

 

Course Tutor: Clinton Wedderburn

Coach Wedderburn is employed as a basketball and athletics coach at the Perse Upper.  He is a Level 3 basketball England qualified coach who has played both in local and National league fixtures for Ipswich and Colchester basketball clubs.  While serving with Colchester basketball he represented England against Harvard University.  Coach Wedderburn is the Head Junior Coach of Cambridge Cats Basketball where he has spent 17 years working with and developing junior players and teams 13 – 18 years old to play in the Basketball England National League.  He is also a junior Cambridgeshire County coach who has been the guiding figure in the development of many individual players that have made the transition from club to university basketball in UK and USA colleges.

Course Profile: Does silk painting a scarf, or printing your design onto canvas appeal to you?  This course will explore how our own designs can be translated onto an object; sewing your printed canvas into a tote bag, tea towel or cushion cover.  This course will provide the materials to do any number of designs for your desired item, exploring batik techniques, lino printing and stencil techniques onto canvas.

 

Course Tutor: Georgina Howling

Georgina Howling is a designer and teacher.  Working at the Perse teaching art to secondary school students, as well as delivering projects to different Primary schools throughout Cambridgeshire.  She combines her teaching with jewellery designing and has an MA from the Royal College of Art in jewellery and metalwork.  She enjoys exploring many different materials within her work and helping others explore their creativity.

Course Profile: Students will create a silver ring using traditional jewellery making techniques, exploring cutting, forming, soldering and polishing. There will also be opportunities to explore contemporary materials, such as silver clay, in order to make a pendant. Alternative designs can be explored through bead loom bracelets, as well as porcelain and other soft materials.

Course Profile: With the numerous cooking and baking shows including Masterchef and the infamous Great British Bake Off encouraging young chefs to try their hand at various complex recipes, this course aims to give young people a chance to develop some everyday skills of their own to avoid those “throw your failed showstopper into the bin” moments.  The complexity of each recipe will vary every day so a range of recipes with differing preparation and cooking times are encountered, which can then be used for any possible future occasions.  The final day will have a specific focus on the ultimate British picnic (come rain or shine!).

Course Profile: In this course we will learn to apply maths to all sorts of different scenarios; whether it be how to traverse the tube, pick a pizza, or win a sports car, maths really is key.  We will explore elements of game theory, graph theory, statistics and much more in a fun, light-hearted way to introduce you to the wider landscape of mathematics.  During the course, you will see areas of the subject that are not commonly covered at school, and you will leave with a far better idea as to what maths really is about.  Suitable for all curious mathematicians, regardless of ability.

 

Course Tutor: James Rhatigan

Course Profile: Students will learn how to navigate using grid references and compasses, before designing their own orienteering courses and running them for peers.  There will also be a variety of teambuilding activities in which the children will develop their leadership, cooperation and communication skills.

Course Profile: Do you love practical work?  Have you missed science club?  This course will allow students to do more practical science experiments that they would not get the chance to do in lessons.  The course will cover fun practicals from all realms of science.  Students will be able to take some of their work home with them and will be provided with a practical book with details of the two practicals which they will be doing each session.  The practical work will be interspersed with fun facts and quizzes to really nurture students interest in science beyond the scope of the curriculum.

Advanced players: this course is aimed at those players with competitive tennis experience.  You will work on the basics, serving accuracy and playing under pressure.  There will be a chance to improve your singles and doubles tactics, enhance your net play, raise your fitness levels and play competitive matches.

 

Course Tutor: Charles Harcourt

Charles has been a professional tennis coach since 1997.  He has coached at Cambridge L.T.C (1997-2002), Hills Road Tennis Centre (1999 to date) and Cocks and Hens L.T.C (2011 to date).  He has been the Perse Upper School coach since 2011.  Charles has been Professional Tennis Registry qualified since May 1997 and an annual PTR conference attendee since 2006 at Hilton Head, South Carolina, USA.

Course Profile: Learn the basics of soap making and formulate your own recipes.  Make a lip balm and a moisturizing cream to take home.  Learn about famous soaps in history and how to recycle oil for soap making.

 

Course Tutor: Henar Tortajada Powys

Henar started to experiment with soap making four years ago and remains fascinated by the process and the results of natural soap on skin.  She has found that natural soap is a great ally to combat eczema and other skin conditions.  Henar attended several workshops to further her knowledge and became interested in the simplicity and beauty of natural products in skincare.  Being a beekeeper Henar also uses hive products in both soap and cosmetics.
