Arduino programming and Sumo robotics

This course aims to give young people a chance to gain an understanding of programming and advanced control system technology, working with programmable electronics together with accelerometers, motors and switches. Individuals will start with the Arduino microcontroller platform and program a variety of inputs and outputs, leading up to programming an electronic game such as the Simon Game. Following on from this an Arduino- controlled robotic vehicle kit will be provided to each person which will require detailed mechanical assembly. Going through a set of programming tasks each person will learn how to control their robot including moving forward, steering, line-following and seeking other robots. This will lead to a game of sumo, a battle of programming innovation and tactics to see which robot can stay in the ring. Besides programming and mechanical assembly there will be some electronic soldering so good manual dexterity is necessary; training will be provided and all individuals will follow a strict health and safety protocol. This course is designed for any ability and no previous experience is needed, however, a logical-mind, an interest in how things work and practical-making is essential. Robots and the electronic game are free to take home and enjoy at the end of this course.

Course description: Some of the most successful computer games in history have been incredibly simple. From Frogger to Flappy Bird, Pacman to Pong, people have enjoyed making and playing basic games for decades. This course aims to give you the opportunity to make your own game from start to finish! We will be designing and drawing our own characters and backdrops, taking inspiration from the artwork of iconic games, and using Scratch to bring them to life. We will also look at the artwork and marketing used to promote these games, before we create our own cover art. The course is available to absolute beginners who have never used Scratch before, as well as more advanced users of the software.

Would you like to make a product from beginning to end? Would you like to design, manufacture and advertise your own work? Come and see the design process in action. Learn how to use design software such as 2D design, Solidworks and Photoshop and see your designs made into reality on the laser cutter, 3D printer and vacuum former. This course is perfect for students wanting to develop creative flair and understanding of the design and manufacturing processes.
