Joining Us

Easing inevitable first day nerves

Induction

Joining a new school can be very daunting but we make every effort to ensure that new pupils and their parents feel part of the school community before the first day of term.

In May, your child will receive a letter from a Year 3 pupil who will act as their buddy during the induction period. The buddy introduces themselves in the letter and shares their experiences of the School. Some children reply and correspondence begins. Around the same time, we hold a New Parents’ Tea Party where you will have the opportunity to learn more about the Prep and meet your child’s future Form Teacher as well as other new parents.

New pupils are invited to the School in groups during June, to meet their new Form Teacher and some classmates, as well as their buddy. During their visit they will join some existing Year 3 pupils for a lesson, take a tour of the School and spend break with their buddy.

In the summer holidays, your child will receive a letter from their new form teacher telling them how much they are looking forward to seeing them again and giving them details of what to do on the first morning when they arrive.

On the first day, your child will be greeted by staff before going to their classroom. They start on a quiet activity before registration, assembly and a morning with their Form Teacher. Over the next few days and weeks, the pupils are slowly introduced to school routines both practical (how to use the door codes, how to borrow a book from the library) and academic (how the timetable works, how work is to be presented) and there is continuous guidance and support as they gradually learn how to organise themselves, their work and their possessions.
